Irwin's Clifton Lodge School was located in Summerfield House, a building which still stands in Dalkey. After his morning duties are concluded, Stephen leaves via an "open porch" and walks "down the gravel path under the trees" to the "gate" at the end of the drive, which is flanked by "lions couchant on the pillars." The pillars have survived, but not the lions.
In the 1950s William York Tindall took a photograph of "the playfield" behind the house. It is not particularly grand.
